H.I.T.S. CULPEPER TO HOST ANNUAL TAD COFFIN USHJA ZONE III EQUITATION FINALS

Circle the date on your calendar for August 23, 2008. That Saturday evening at 6pm will be post time for the third annual Tad Coffin Zone III Equitation Finals, an event not to be missed. You will be treated to a spectacle of the area’s (Md., Va., N.C., Del., W.Va.) most talented young riders vying for a chance to win not only the championship title, but a custom made Tad Coffin saddle, valued at approximately $4500.00.

Olympic Equestrian Gold Medalist Tad Coffin whose base is in Ruckersville, Va. is the proud sponsor of this event. Tad has been constructing saddles since 1976 and is passionate about the quality and design of his products. Touted by such successful riders as Louise Serio and Candace King, this is a coveted piece of equipment for the serious equestrian and will be hand crafted to the specifications of our winning horse and rider.

Bridgewater College will host an opening dinner reception ringside prior to and during the competition. All class exhibitors, families and their friends are invited to attend the party and root for their favorites. The school, located in Bridgewater, Va. is well known not only for their academic excellence, but also for their successful IHSA show team. Their elegant equestrian center is second to none in the central Virginia area and is the home base for a thriving equestrian program. Head coach Sarah Irvine and her staff will be on hand to answer any inquiries regarding their school and riding opportunities.

The main event should start near 6:30 pm when the first of approximately 35 eager contestants will attack a challenging course set in the H.I.T.S. Grand Prix arena. The riders have had to qualify through the last year by winning a national or state medal class in Zone 3 at either the 3’ or 3’6” division. The 3’ section will compete first followed by those showing at the 3’6” height. Riders will be scored under the watchful eye of veteran horse show judge Christina Schlusemeyer of Ocala, Fl. Ms. Schlusemeyer has produced a number of national equitation champions over the years and is sure to test the mettle of our highest scoring finishers.

All riders will receive goodie bags from the USHJA. Among the additional awards will be custom half chaps from Pinnell Custom Leather, a bridle from Ginny Edwards and Hidden Hollow Farm, engraved memento boxes from the Preppy Pink Pony, and gift certificates from Champion Saddlery. There are also cash awards which will be presented to the leading trainers.

You won’t want to miss this exciting evening of equestrian competition in Culpeper and cheer on the best young riders that our area has to offer. The public is invited and there is no admission charge for this event. For further information contact H.I.T.S. at 845-246-8833, Pam Freeley at 540-272-4144 or email allstarpro112@yahoo.com.

USHJA Announces the Creation of the Emerging Athletes Program

The USHJA is proud to announce the creation of the Emerging Athletes Program. This program supports our continuing efforts to bring educational and developmental opportunities to the grassroots members of our sport. The USHJA Emerging Athletes Program consists of a system of identifying and nurturing talented young riders. The program's mission is to provide these riders with the support and assistance necessary to facilitate the opportunity to reach their full potential by creating a national program as a step ladder to international competition.

"This is a national grass roots program for emerging athletes that is only the start of something very big and important to the future of the next generation of our sport. USHJA and the members of the Emerging Athletes Committee are committed to making this program one that will provide a stepladder for young talent to reach their goals of riding on a team representing the United States someday." Stated Melanie Smith, Co-Chairman of the Emerging Athletes Committee.

The Emerging Athletes Committee has conducted several in person strategic planning meetings and developed a comprehensive plan to achieve their goals. The program includes a series of Screening Trials consisting of 2 days of riding, held across the country to identify talented young riders, many of whom are not on our current radar. Riders will be selected from these Screening Trials to attend Regional Screening Trials, held over 3 - 4 days, including horsemanship curriculum in addition to the riding sessions. A select number of riders will then be invited to participate in a National Training Camp, held over 5 days, including riding sessions, stable management, horsemanship and seminars with veterinarians, nutritionists, blacksmiths and sports psychologists. The National Training Camp will culminate in a Nations Cup type competition for the riders. The top two individuals selected from the National Training Camp will be the recipients of a grant for one month of advanced training.

Ronnie Beard, Co-Chairman of the Emerging Athletes Committee shared his passion for this program and what it will achieve. "The system we have created will demand horsemanship at a level that many young riders today have been missing from their curriculum. The screening trails are designed to find the true horseman that exist in our equestrian youth and demonstrate to all young riders what it really takes to be a champion."

The Emerging Athletes Committee Members: Ronnie Beard - Co-Chair, Melanie Smith - Co-Chair, Georgina Bloomberg, Sally Ike, Candace King, Kathy Moore, Katie Prudent, Alison Robitaille, Eliza Shuford and Chrystine Tauber. John Madden and George Morris serve as Advisors to the Committee.

Information regarding the Screening Trials, application process and schedule of events will be available at www.ushja.org in October of 2008.

For additional information, please contact Melanie Fransen, Director of Programs and Education at mfransen@ushja.org or 859.225.6960.

USHJA Announces the Creation of the United States Hunter Jumper Association Foundation

In December of 2007, the USHJA Board of Directors unanimously approved the creation of the United States Hunter Jumper Association Foundation. The USHJA Foundation is an independent organization, developed in response to the requests of members to support the programs of the USHJA, while creating and implementing additional initiatives to benefit our sport.

The programs that the new USHJA Foundation will be supporting include educational scholarships through our USHJA Zones, projects that foster growth at the grassroots level of participation, Trainers' Symposiums, the Emerging Athletes Program and emergency relief for members of our equestrian community needing assistance.

The USHJA Foundation's primary responsibility is to solicit and receive charitable contributions from individuals and entities which will assist the USHJA in fulfilling its mission. Contributors will be able to make restricted or unrestricted donations to support the programs of their choice.

"The USHJA Foundation will provide philanthropic equestrians and supporters of our industry with the ability to play an important role in the future of our sport. Each contributor to the Foundation will know they personally made a difference. Every donation will provide the USHJA with the ability to secure educational resources, as well as, build programs and events that will carry the hunter and jumper industry into a promising future. I could not be more excited about the amazing opportunities USHJA will be able to create for its members with the support of the USHJA Foundation," stated Lynn Jane, President of the USHJA Foundation Board of Directors.

Contact Senators Now!
State Budget effects the Equine community There are several budget issues before the Senate today and we need your help in preserving the Equine Community. Please note that the NCDA&CS has requested dollars to help build new barns at the Hunt Horse Complex. In addition, the Ag Dept requested do llars to build a new equine facility at the Southeastern Ag Center in Lumberton. Another bill being introduced in the House which will need Senate support is HB 2675. This would allocate an additional $892,000 dollars to the State Adopt a Trail Program and requests that the funds are non-reverting.

Finally, our NCSU Agricultural Programs and Ag Extension program have been dramatically cut. The House passed budget bill cut Agricultural Programs (NC Agricultural Research Service and NC Cooperative Extension) a disproportionate amount (item 44 under Section A. Base Budget Adjustments). With increased fuel, fertilizer, feed, seed and chemical costs, Ag Program needs more funding (an inflationary increase), not less. We ask that the cut for Agricultural Programs be eliminated and an additional $1.5 million be allocated for inflationary increases in Agricultural programs.

To help with these issues please call, write or email the following legislators and voice your support:

Aequus+//
Arabian
Owner: Hazelbank Investments

Aequus+//, the winningest park horse in the history of the Arabian breed Aequus+in the United States, is the only horse to have won the open and amateur park horse championship in the same year. Furthermore, he accomplished this at the age of 19. Bill Rodgers, who works with Aequus at Freedom Farm said that this unique stallion is "a pet to them - an angel, the sweetest thing."

As a final tribute to his outstanding show career, Aequus+// will carry the American flag at the 2008 U.S. National Arabian & Half- Arabian Championships in Tulsa, where he will be formally retired from competition. However, we will no doubt be thrilled for generations to come by the offspring of this remarkable horse.

Esteban
Friesian
Owner: Deb Goldmann

Esteban, a six-year-old Friesian is described as being gentle and quiet while in the barn by his owner, Deb Goldmann. However, she added, "he's a ham and loves to be the center of the show," once he enters the ring. Esteban proved her true at the 2007 International Friesian Show Horse Association (IFSHA) World and Grand National Championship Horse Show. When shown at hand with handler Steven Stiller, he was all class, topping the gelding ranks. Goldmann chose Stiller to show Esteban because he is the only handler who can keep up the 16.1-hand gelding. When it came to the driving classes, Esteban demonstrated that he was not only ideal in conformation, but had talent as well. His ability to adapt was showcased as he was awarded national champion titles with three different drivers- David Hennen, Gwyneth Rausch, and Goldmann. As the competition year ended, Esteban held the National Horse of the Year titles for both Friesian in-hand and driving divis ions.

Hackney
Owner: Blevins Farms

This beautiful, athletic and perfectly mannered pony is not only an ambassador for the Hackney breed, but for show horses of all breeds. His beauty and willingness to perform in the roadster pony division not only requires an elegant neck- and head-set along with extreme motion, but also speed. The fact that he has done this for 25 consecutive classes without defeat is truly a remarkable accomplishment.

At 14 years of age, his wins include three times World's Grand Champion, Canadian National Grand Champion and American National Grand Champion at the American Royal Horse Show recently in Kansas City. He has performed to capacity crowds of as many as 30,000 people in the last few years and literally hundreds of thousands of people have seen him.

Theodore O'Connor
Eventing
Owner: The Theodore O'Connor Syndicate, LLC

At 12-years of age, Theodore O'Connor was the first pony in history to compete at the Pan American games. Known as "Teddy," this 14.1-hand Thoroughbred/Arabian/Shetland cross led the U.S. eventing team to a Gold medal and brought home an Individual Gold, as well.

With veteran rider Karen O'Connor, the chestnut gelding captured the heart of the eventing world at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, where he placed third in his four-star eventing competition. "The pony" sailed around the cross-country course, and amazed crowds as he finished the show jumping portion of the competition without a single rail down. Then, the pair went on to the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where he dispelled any ideas that a pony didn't belong. After finishing the dressage portion of the competition in third place, Teddy completed the cross-country phase at the top of the ranks. With his stellar jumping ability, he navigated the show jumping course with a single rail down, assuring him and O'Connor the Gold. When the awards were presented, Theodore O'Connor certainly wowed the crowd as he galloped around the arena, inches shorter than his Gold-medal teammates.

Karen O'Connor
William C. Steinkraus Trophy
Eventing

Karen O'Connor is already a legend in the eventing world. Since she began her eventing career, she has won Olympic medals, been named the United States Eventing Association's Lady Rider of the Year a record ten times, and ridden such horses as Biko and Prince Panache. However, 2007 has been another exhilarating year for O'Connor. Paired with a 14.1-hand Thoroughbred/Shetland/Arabian cross named Theodore O'Connor (Teddy), she made history. Not only was Teddy the first pony ever to compete at the Pan American Games in eventing, but with O'Connor's expert talent, they returned from the games with two Gold medals. This followed a third-place finish at the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day-Event, the pair's first four-star competition. This all took place while O'Connor was competing at international events with her other mounts- Upstage, Hugh Knows, Mandiba and Allstar. Her list of accomplishments for 2007 is extraordinary, to say the least.

Miranda Cadwell
Becky Grand Hart Trophy
Driving

Two years ago, Miranda Cadwell looked for a single pony to drive, but ended up buying a pair. This year it paid off as she earned the Individual Gold medal at the World Pony Driving Championship in Dorthealyst, Denmark. Cadwell's Gold helped the U.S. team to the Bronze medal.

While several drivers reported the marathon obstacle as technically and physically challenging, Cadwell remained at ease while driving the courses. She was the fastest driver in two of the obstacles with her pair of golden geldings, Toby Taz and Rambo. For four obtacles, she was the second fastest. With the power provided by the two ponies, Cadwell has found her calling. This is assured, as she finished 2007 first in the FEI North American Driving Challenge Pairs Ponies.

Hunter

Accepting the Emerson Burr Trophy for outstanding achievement in the hunter divisions is nothing new for Scott Stewart. Having won the award first in 2003, 2007 brought about another string of victories for Stewart, giving him an inspiring show record for the year. At the top of that record was Stewart securing the Leading Hunter Rider title at the Devon Horse Show for the fifth year running. What makes the fete even more impressive is that he accumulated the most points towards the award with a catch ride. With only a few schooling jumps under his belt before the class, Stewart rode Highland Park in the Grand Hunter Championship. To finish out the year, Stewart captured the champion titles in both the regular working hunter and in the Moxie Equestrian, Inc. regular conformation hunter divisions at the National Horse Show. Zone News

USHJA Zone III Junior Equitation Finals Open to Junior Members of USHJA who reside in Zone III. Qualifying shall be winning any of the Zone III state equitation medals or by winning either the USEF Medal, ASPCA Medal or WISH Medal classes that are held in Zone III.

Classes shall be divided by height; 3 feet and under and over 3 feet. There will be two height sections: 3' and 3'6". Course for the finals shall consist of at least ten jumping efforts with at least one combination and two changes of direction. Qualifying period extended: Qualifying period shall be from September 1st through August 25th July 30th. Class may be split at the discretion of the committee.

This is the class that Pam Freely heads and apparently they would like to move it around to different shows. It has been in Culpeper but apparently Pam has called to see if any of the NC fall shows could accomodate it. This is the class that so many of our trainers etc did not know about so I am going to try to keep us all appraised as to its progress and its developments.

Here are the 2008 zone specs for all divisions:
http://ushja.org/committees/zone3/2008%20Zone%203%20Specifications.pdf (note the age group for adult splits have changed as per our discussions.)

Another thing that we need to stay on top of is the affiliate's "grassroots" efforts which we should promote among our NCHJA C show managers and see if we could not get this going in NC.

The goal of the Community Horse Shows Committee is to work closely with the USEF National Affiliates Working Group to develop and promote programs that will benefit affiliate organizations, unrecognized competitions and the grassroots competitors. This special committee has been formed within USHJA to research hunter and jumper competitions and how USHJA can help create and implement a community level horse show program.

They gave out Affilitate Awards at the Phoenix banquet. This is what we nominated Kim and Carlos for last year (and they won!) . We need to be sure we nominate someone each year. These awards are given to a winner from nominations sent in by the affilitate associations for one Amateur, one professional and on Junior. We really need someone to stay on top of this program and see if we want to incorporate our C show finals with this program next year!

The USHJA has developed an "Outreach" membership category - $15.00. It is asking the Affiliates to promote this among their membership. It will offer the following:

  1. Subscription to the USHJA magazine
  2. Involvement in the new Associate level Medal program
  3. Eligibility for clinics and educational programs
  4. End of year recognition in the Associate Award program.

The Associate Medal program consists of:

  1. Any Associate of the USHJA can apply to have their current Medal program recognized by the USHJA
  2. Each Associate can have up to 3 medals recognized - 1 pony, 1 junior, 1 amateur (exceptions can be made if your organization is geared toward one type of membership - ie. a college)
  3. The USHJA will "piggyback" on the existing medal program for each associate -no changes will be made to the medal classes or finals
  4. The USHJA will provide keepsake awards for the finals for all "Outreach" members of the USHJA
  5. The USHJA is trying to find those who may be competing on an unrecognized circuit with offering recognition by the national governing body of our sport

Following is a chart of Pony Distances and Horse Distances that is used by many course designers as a guide when building hunter courses. The NCHJA recommends that Pony Distances be changed for small, medium and large pony hunters at both “A” and “C” shows. Further, Horse Distances should be adjusted as needed depending on the height of the jump, size of the ring and ring conditions. CLICK HERE for the Distances Chart.

Triangle Farms

Wake Forest NC 27587

Dear Joan and the membership of the NCHJA,

Thank you very much for your continued and significant help to the future equine clinicians at your College of Veterinary Medicine. As you know, the average education debt of veterinary student is about $70,000. Since the NCHJA started its endowment through 2006, you have $32,000 in your endowed account and have given $5,000 directly to students. With your donation this year, you could double that direct help to equine oriented students.

We are a unique horse state in the top 10 horse population states in that our horse industry is primarily related to sport horses and not racing horses. In those other 9 states with racing, a percent of the betting handle usually goes toward that state’s horse health research. So as a major sport horse organization thank you again for realizing and being a leader in the need for health care financial assistance here in North Carolina.

If anyone would like a tour of the College of Veterinary Medicine or knows a young person who would like to see the College, please let me know. I would be glad to show anyone what we do here at the College and all the exciting areas of equine medicine and surgery.

Hope you have a safe and healthy year for yourself, your family, and your horses.

Best,

Richard A. Mansmann, VMD, PhD

RIDING FOR READING RECEIVES GRANTS FOR 2007 AND EXPANDS ITS PROGRAMS

Riding For Reading, a non-profit organization (501(c)3) dedicated to promoting reading, literacy, and education through equestrian sports and activities, is pleased to announce that it has received two important grants to augment its 2007 budget. The Equus Foundation selected Riding For Reading as a recipient of one of its 2007 grants, and the United States Hunter Jumper Association also provided a grant.

These grants will be used to help fund Riding For Reading’s equestrian based literacy programs. Riding For Reading’s flagship activity is its Riding For Reading Class. This pleasure-type class is open to any junior rider in 1st through 12th grade, and riders compete in the class representing their school. Regardless of how riders place in the class, every rider’s school receives a donation to its library. Riders receive awards provided by Riding For Reading sponsors and supporters.

At its inaugural event in Los Angeles, CA (Sept. 2006), 50 riders competed in the class and 46 unique schools received donations to their libraries. Riding For Reading distributed over $5,000 to schools throughout Los Angeles. Many riders were recognized by their schools for their riding accomplishments. One school wrote:

It is rare and impressive that an organization such as yours would decide to actively support the educational needs of its participants, as well as their equestrian needs. We plan to honor Chelsea James by purchasing equestrian related books with this grant. Newbury Park High, California.

More than 20,000 students benefited from improved library materials because of the Los Angeles Riding For Reading Class. Because of the success of this program and the Equus Foundation and USHJA grants, the Riding For Reading Board of Directors voted to expand its programs in 2007. Shows interested in hosting a Riding For Reading Class are invited to submit an application.

Applications are available online at www.ridingforreading.org and are due by March 1, 2007. Riding For Reading plans to select three to five shows to host a Riding For Reading Class. Detailed information is available on the Riding For Reading website. Riding For Reading will announce the 2007 host shows by the end of March.

Riding for Reading is also pleased to announce that the University of Southern California’s Trojan Equestrian Team has signed up to help Riding For Reading. The USC Equestrian Team will help the non-profit literacy organization with its book drives. To read the complete press release click here www.legupnews.com/press_socal_usc_EQT.php.

LEG Up News provides media and publicity services to Riding For Reading in order to help support and promote the non-profit association’s valuable literacy programs.

The NCHJA Equine Veterinary Student Scholarship – a history and much gratitude!

Dick Mansmann

In the late 1990’s, then Dean Oscar Fletcher of the College of Veterinary Medicine at NC State saw a need to develop scholarship programs for veterinary student. Even though the tuition at NC State was lower than most veterinary colleges, student were graduating and starting into practice with considerable debt. A scholarship development campaign was instituted by the NC Veterinary Medical Foundation of the College by then President Glenn Petty. Also, as president of the NCHJA, he brought this information to the NCHJA Board of Directors and in 1999, the NCHJA decided to begin to fund a $25,000 endowed scholarship. Beginning with the year 2000, proceeds from the previous June’s horse show - $5,000 – was given to the NCHJA scholarship. It came mature in 2004 and the first award from its interest was given to 1st year veterinary student and NCHJA member, Boo Donoho. The scholarship is awarded to a student who both has need for tuition and other college related expenses and who is dedicated to becoming a veterinarian dealing with equine problems. In 2005, Lisa Kivett was awarded the scholarship from your endowment’s interest. Lisa is this year’s President of the student chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and they have had a very active year organizing a very successful stallion service auction and a three day disaster medicine course for students and veterinarians.

Students from NC State College of Veterinary Medicine graduate, on average, with $60,000 in debt. This year President Joan Petty felt it would be advantageous to place half of the $5000 donation into the endowment and give the other half as a second scholarship to help reduce debt to equine oriented students. So this will provide one $1000 scholarship and a second $2500 scholarship to be awarded this year. As members of the NCHJA, you ought to be proud that you are helping future equine clinicians get through their education. They could well be helpful to your horses’ health sometime in the near future.

The College of Veterinary Medicine is also very grateful for your generosity and hopes you will feel this contribution has value to continue in the years to come.
